What are winter tyres?

The most important thing to remember is that winter tyres aren’t only for use when driving in the snow. They’re perfect for the wet and icy surfaces typical of British winters because they’re made to be utilised when temperatures drop below 7°C.

Is it worth having winter tyres?

Although our winters aren’t generally very extreme, there are arguments for having winter tyres on your car throughout the winter months.

Here are some reasons why:

They provide you with increased grip and stability because of the way that they are built with a special type of rubber which doesn’t harden in colder temperatures.
Substantially shorter stopping distances – if you’re driving at 20mph in wintry conditions with winter tyres, your stopping distance will be up to 11 metres less than if you were driving with standard tyres.
Less chance of aquaplaning – the tread pattern on winter tyres is developed so that water on the road surface is dispersed more effectively, which reduces the chance of you aquaplaning.
